BCM 332 Digital artifact contextual statement

In everyday newspaper, there are more and more reports on teenagers committed suicide because of the cyber-bullying online . They didn’t know what to do and thought they are the only victim in the world. Then they started thinking into dark side and think ending their lives as a solution.

Hong Kong Family Welfare Society in 2012 found that one in three students between Primary Four to secondary Three were victims of cyberbullying……..cyberbullying victims as young as 10 will experience a sense of “overwhelming loneliness” and may choose not to tell an adult because of the Chinese cultural tendency to want to “save face”.”

It is getting more and more serious. When I found out the situation of online bullying nowadays, I feel so upset about what teenagers nowadays have gone through and I started to do more research on regulation of cyber-bullying in Hong Kong. However, there are no specific law to protect cyber-bullying victims. there are only Tort Law and accuse them as Nuisance or Defamation but it is difficult to chase the online bullies since bullies online is always  using a nameless identity which makes the investigation so difficult.

At the same time, I released the pattern of cyber-bullying. It would rather be mean comments or exposing your personal information online and let other internet users to judge you openly. Thus I think the best way to protect yourself from getting bullied online is to protect your privacy. Because bullies online always use victims’ personal information exposure as the personal attack. It creates huge impact to the victims especially to the teenagers.

“cyberbullying is a common problem amongst young people and that it can have a serious impact on their mental health and school functioning. Most cases of cyberbullying originate in the offline social context of the school.”   Heidi, 2014

Because of that, In the digital artifact I have created a YouTube video as a public announcement to the teenagers in order to educate them the best way to face cyber-bullying. The reason why i want to create a YouTube video rather than a website or article is teenager nowadays love watching YouTube and attracted to graphics. By YouTube videos, it matches what teenagers habits nowadays and easy for them to found it online like a embedded advertisement and insert the message that they are not alone, and way to protect them from cyber-bullying.

I used a storytelling method to tell about teenagers from getting entertained online to getting bullied . And then they have their parents to protect them and the way to protect their privacy . Lastly , I left a inspiring quote at the end to cheers teenagers up to think positive and never say yes to the bullies. For the whole video, I used a passionate background music and helping to lift the atmosphere of the video to become more positive and breath-taking.

I hope through this video beside it can educate teenagers how to deal with cyber-bullying and also raise the awareness of how serious cyber-bullying is in Hong Kong nowadays and hoping more organisation will interrupt the situation of cyber-bullying and help the teenagers.

Case study: Cyberbullying Part 3

“Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS, Text, and apps, or online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content. ” U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In this decade, internet life becomes a big part of us. People share most of their lifetime on internet. The identity of cyber life is also what they concerned. That’s why cyberbulying causes serious consequences to internet users.

I can simply open the well-known Hong Kong forum, LIHKG which has many discussions about the society. I can see that the comment of members who directed against some specific members that they don’t like and sometimes they would curse to others’ members parents.

“Things happen in Vegas, Stay in Vegas” Unfortunately, things happen online , don’t just stay online. It influences the real life. As the news reported, there were people who felt depressed after being bullying online and committed suicide.

Why does bullying occur online so often?

Based on the exam from 1963 middle school in the state, “cyberbullying victims and offenders both have significantly lower self-esteem than those who have not been cyberbul- lying victims or offenders. This persisted even while controlling for gender, race, and age, although our results suggest that males, non-Whites, and older mid- dle schoolers tend to have lower levels of self-esteem than their peers.”   JUSTIN W. PATCHIN, SAMEER HINDUJA.

Let’s use LIHKG as the local example, most of the time when members criticize some topics or users from mainland China, they would receive more likes on their comment and posts. From the picture, we can see the mean comments has received 51 of likes. The act of cyberbullying has got support from online. It’s passively encouraging bullyer to bully to get more support and understanding.

Applying the exam result from JUSTIN W. PATCHIN, SAMEER HINDUJA. Cyberbullying abusers and victims they are both have low self-esteem in real life. By replying the mean comments online, it may enhances their confident that other members agree his thought and also create the sense of belonging of the cyber community as they have their supporters online.

As we can see, most of the comments against mainland Chinese people, they even called them ” Chinese locust” to jeer at them which is satirizing the behavior how mainlanders occupy the sources for example milk powders, the spaces from local Hong Kong people.

In addition, the increasing numbers of cyberbullying may caused by the minority stereotype and mutual topic. As Audrey Sham ” Mediating Racism” blog post mentioned. screen-shot-2018-06-01-at-12-10-16-pm.png

Southern Asian has been called “Southern Asian Corps” in Hong Kong since the robbery issues in quick succession are caused by south Asian.  But not all of the south Asian are robber, for lack of better option, south Asian becomes the hot topic, and forum members replied mean comments about south Asian in order to gain the confidence, as well as mainland Chinese.

Since the cultural difference and the capacity problem, local people feel really disrespectful for the dominance and the inconvenience caused by non-local. As the online platform users are nameless and faceless, they don’t have to beer the moral judgement from other people, lots of users start attacking others online and seeking for the against-ed non-local community to share the same pride as a spokesperson and satisfy their anger and desire from cyberbullying mainland Chinese people.

However in Hong Kong, is there any regulation to protect internet users or prevent malicious criticism? let's find out.

Screen Shot 2018-07-13 at 4.36.41 PM.png

From the journal “Why Hong Kong Should Legislate on Cyberbullying” Entry No. 13 mentioned there is no specific law to against Cyberbullying but vicim can seek help from Tort Law as Nuisance or Defamation but the law are not made for cyberbullying. Some of the situation may not apply to cyberbullying properly. Also the various of cyberbullying cases are happening on internet, its hard to manage them all.

Why don't set up an association or law to band all the cyberbullying?

It is because right of speech is the main consideration of internet. I remember when I study DIGC 202 Globel Network , Dr Kat said Internet is a cyber-utopia which requires freedom and independent . If there are legislation to limit the speech online , isn’t it putting the cart before the horse?

In face, there are still no case references about incriminating a cyberbuller who is completely stranger from the victims.

Although there are controversy of legislating a law to specific against cyberbullying. The Golden forum which is the famous forum in Hong Kong, it’s founder set up a foul language filter. When forum users type foul language in Chinese , it’s Chinese foul language will translate to other funny phrases instead of the foul language.

CAPTURE FROM GOLDEN FORUM

Golden forum users were trying to figure how the foul language filter works and some of them even create a golden forum dictionary which translate back the funny phrases to foul language. It helped a lot of cyberbullying since people can’t use foul language to insult the victims.  Although since then users love to uncover victims’ background to attack them until now , there are report system on social media which allow users to report bullier and delete their account but its still not really deterring to stop cyberbullying.

What can we do to against Cyberbullying ?

“cyberbullying is a common problem amongst young people and that it can have a serious impact on their mental health and school functioning. Most cases of cyberbullying originate in the offline social context of the school.”   Heidi, 2014

To against cyberbullying, we should start from education . Based on the research from International Journal of Cyber Society and Education P.41 “it is important that interventions, materials, and tools related to cyberbullying be described clearly (93%), applied easily (94%) closely related to their living world (95%). ”

By educating the importance of online privacy and cyberbullying , it may help internet user against cyberbullying and prevent cyberbullying occurred at the same time. School should raise the awareness of cyberbullying by holding a cyber security talk show, support group,team-building workshop…… . Also, teachers should aware how students act at school and be patient with them.

Besides, protecting our own privacy is also important to cyber-bullying.  Cyberbullyer usually posts victims old posts or some secret online and let other users to judge the victims blindly.  To prevent the act of cyberbullying, we shouldn’t expose our own information on internet easily, and be careful what we said to our friends since one of them are the cyberbullier as well.

In my opinion, its impossible to eliminate all the cyberbullying, since internet is world wide and it’s free of speech as well. We need to accept there are different opinion out there. However, I think as internet users, we need to have a critical thinking and self-protection online. We all know that information are flowing on internet freely, we cannot make sure the quality of information, some might be directed against , some might be real. We need to think before say something and figure right or wrong.

Blog Design strategies Review

Time runs fast, it finally comes to the final blog of the course but not the final assignment lol. For the past few weeks, I have submitted two submissions of blog posts which are the blog 1-4 and blog 5-8. After blog 1-4, I have changed my style of the whole theme of my blog design due to the lecture about blog design strategies and the comments from my friends. Now, let me share how’s the growth of my blogs.

First Submission Blog Posts

For the first submission blog 1-4, let’s be honest. I didn’t do really well which didn’t really reader friendly. For the layout of the my WordPress account. I used a light blue theme, black and white picture as the cover page and a selfie as my profile icon which doesn’t really connect with each other and make reader feel unprofessional as my image. Moreover, I didn’t always put all the relevant blogs into the same side bar section, sometimes i would just published it on the wall and forgot to classify them as the same course’s blogs.

Screen Shot 2018-07-12 at 11.56.01 PM
One of My blog post from the 1st submission

About the content of my blogs, my blogs were too text oriented. Although my contents were funny and contain jokes and slang, it’s boring when readers first looked at it and there weren’t a lot of readers read my blogs because the cover and layout of the blogs are too plain. Also, I didn’t have a feature picture or eye-catching title to draw the attention from readers. It didn’t looked like a blog page , it’s more like a boring article page. However, I added my social media links on the blogs, I have had an increased number of followers on my social media including Facebook and Instagram.

Second Submission Blog Posts

After my first submission, I have received my tutor’s comment of my previous blogs which said my language was too informal and lacked of attractiveness. Also, we have a lecture of  design strategies about color and content. Thus, I  have made these changes to better my blogs.

Screen Shot 2018-07-12 at 11.55.30 PM
The layout design of my WordPress now

First about the content of my blogs, I have changed the theme from a blue , black and white color pattern to a black and white classic image. For the profile icon, I changed my selfie to a professional self-portrait as well in order to match the whole theme as one and make a clean visual effect. Besides, for the side bar of my blog page. I have added 3 sections in order to include the blogs from 3 semesters and each sections I have added different courses’ code to easier for reader to search my blog posts whatever they want.

Screen Shot 2018-07-12 at 11.56.21 PM Screen Shot 2018-07-12 at 11.56.46 PM

About the modified contents, I got this idea from YouTube videos. Nowadays, there are many videos on YouTube contains “Cliclbait” , eye-catching “thumbnails” in order to catch the attention from audiences and become viral. I think i can do the same things as the YouTube creators have done. Thus, in every blog posts on submission 2, I have added a feature picture and exclaimed title with capital letter to catch the attention and make the blogs look more interesting. Inside the blog posts, I also added sub heading to layer my blog and makes my blog divided into different sections which easier for readers to read my blogs as well.

Although i have made changes to improve my WordPress blogs, there are still improvements to make when I continue to run this account. I treated my blog posts as my Facebook posts because I want to my blogs to be more entertained like a magazine to entertain and bring some unique, extra-curricular content to my readers. Sometimes i may not contain as much funny extra article or information from online, in fact, most of my blogs are just written by my opinion, what i have learnt or what i have observed which didn’t brought new contents to my readers. I hope in the future when I write my blog posts, I can add more relevant information to my blogs in order to bring more knowledges to my audiences.  That’s may also linked to my second problem.

The diversity of my readers. I haven’t had a diversity of my readers’ communities. Most of the audiences of my blogs are my classmates although i made one friend through WordPress who is called Natalia from USA. She is a fashion blogger.

Screen Shot 2018-07-13 at 1.10.43 AM.png
One of my followers : Natalia

She hasn’t commented frequently on my blog posts. If I continue my blog page in the future, I will promote my WordPress account through my Facebook and Instagram which I have followers from different countries that may help to increase the diversity of my audiences a lot.

However, I have received lots of comments about my modified WordPress theme from my classmates in class. Most of them said my page looks more neat and professional after the first submission which i think I will keep the same style in the future. After this course, I think I will use my WordPress to be my travel blog page which match with my original intention of blog posts.

Proposal- How Media Changes the Communication in My Family

Background

“Medium is the Message” by M. Mcluhan. Media has been occurred in our daily life for so long. It shapes how people living in every generation. Back in the 60s, people may like to use phone call  as their main medium to communicate and connect with each other, media helps people to shape and better their life. However, in 2018, different types of new media pops up in our life, how do they react to the new media? Will they still remain to use the old medium. I think it will be interesting to found out the result. Thus, I will have these remain sub-questions to guide my project direction:

  1. How do my parents communicate in the past ?
  2. How do I and they communicate now ?
  3. After the changes of media, which generations of media will I and they prefer to use?

Methodology

In order to collect data to support my project, I would collect two type of data. For the first part, I will collect data from primary research. By observing my parents’ social media and the medium that they communicate to me , I will take picture as a record of the medium that they are using. Also, I will record a video which i interview my parents and asking about how they communicate in the past and now , and compared between these two , which medium they would prefer. Thus, I would have the structure of my project content.

And then, for the secondary research, I will do online research and collect different relevant article, journal and scholar data to analysis the result from the interview and the observation. Currently, I  found a journal named ” Media, Gender and Identity” D.Gauntlett

"It seems obvious and inevitable, then, that we will be affected by these
experiences somehow. The media shows us situations and relationships
from other people’s points of view – indeed, it is part of the eternal fascination
of drama that we can see ‘how the world works’ in lives other than our
2 INTRODUCTION
own. This could hardly fail to affect our own way of conducting ourselves,
and our expectations of other people’s behaviour" D.Gauntlett 2008

It matches what our expected is. Also, in the journal , it contains further impact of media and gender identity which can also richer my project content.

In addition, I will present my project as a website. Since I have a big passion to be a blogger, I love creating my own website, it can represent myself, at the same time, i think it is really interesting to work with. After I finish this project, I will also send this product website to my employer company which may enhance my interview result. But back to the medium, Website. It can contain various of media which benefits me to present my project result freely and interestingly.

Expectation

I have an expected project result in my mind. I think my parents would prefer the older media medium more than the latest medium. Because my parents are from the generation X. In their generation, their knowledge level of technology is lower. They don’t have a certain knowledge to technology as technology at that time wasn’t that popular. Thus I think they will prefer the traditional medium.

Conclusion

In my opinion,  as a Generation Y resident. I think we can’t live without internet and media space anymore. Media does gives us a lot easy life, however, the addiction is too serious. Some of the people may anti-social in real life and social in the cyber space. Sometimes, I would appreciate how Generation X people live in the past. They were living in the most original way, it makes me feel the real skin connection with people and nature.

Let’s be Lonely Together!!!

This week the topic is Public Media Space and ambient TV.  When my lecturer explained what ambient TV and how people using private media in public space. I have already found an example right in 2 seconds.

IMG_1754
ps:the ambient laptop monitors in class

Isn’t it so relatable to the lecture? haha. In face,it is so easy to find ambient TV in the public space nowadays.

IMG_1760
People were waiting for collecting the orders in McDonalds Hong Kong

We can see people are talking and some of them are using their phones in the public.  Although it seems like people are using their phone are anti-social than the 2 lady talking in the picture, they are just socialising in different way.

In real life, media occurred in different format, such as advertisements on TV, the billboards in subway …… . You may not really realise whats going on out there, since usually you will just take a glance of them and then back into your mobile phone.  It doesn’t mean you are wrong or anti-social . It just means that you are into different lifestyle than the traditional people. Nowadays, we can get a online gadget to access online so easily. It becomes cheaper and cheaper , thus it becomes popular in just a decade of time. Also, in your own mobile device, you can choose what you want to see from your mobile, it is a small online community . People all gather online in order to have entertainment and connect with each other.

However, Why are Ambient TVs still here?

In my opinion, it’s because everything still has its function. Although we may not care about the ambient TVs that much. However, to people still don’t have mobile devices or disable people, it may still works to them.

On the other hand, it may due to companies want to increase the exposure of its product as well. Companies want to promote themselves in every corner. Although sometimes we don’t really watch about the ambient TVs, it’s brainwashing the content of the messages to us. Just like when you think of an Apple, you may reflect as an Apple computer.

I feel like ambient TVs is fine but i hope people can be environmental friendly to the TVs. In Hong Kong, there are lots of ambient TVs, even in some small corner placement. I think if there is no one there, people can just turn it off as it creates no promote or any impact to consumers.

Virgin IMAX Experience !!!!

My Best cinema experience was the first time to try the Imax cinema in Cyberport, Aberdeen which was built with the theme of futuristic architecture. And when it just opened, the IMAX cinema is the main selling point of the mall since there wasn’t much IMAX cinema in Hong Kong at that time.

cyberport-1440x564_c

So one day, my auntie and my family went out to watch the local movie called CJ7.l_p1011106265This movie was so famous in the Hong Kong movie Industry because it contained lots of CG and animation of the green little guy. Although compared to the Hollywood movie, it’s not a big deal, to the HK movie , it’s a big stepping stone.

Let’s dig into the main feature. So when we walked inside to the cinema. The atmosphere was really elegant. Its full of dark red carpet, and everyone were smiling and nice to us. For the tuck shop, there were various options of snacks for us to choice. Including Beer, Chips, coke, Pop Corn , Hotdog. The most surprised me the most was beer, because there wan’t many cinema sells beer in Hong Kong. We ended up bought coke and popcorn to the cinema . Nothing better than the popcorn right hahaah?

When my foot stepped into the IMAX movie show room, it really surprised me. There were only about 30 seats inside, also for the first roll of the seats were still have a good distance between the monitor as well. The seats were big and soft red sofa. And we were surrounding by lots of thick dark noise cancelling walls.

Oh forget the speaking system , the speakers were surrounding by us. When the movie characters were speaking , it seems they were just speaking next to our ears. The most important is the audiences were so discipline as well, they didn’t talk or eat out loud in the cinema, everyone were just enjoying our quality time in the cinema.

Back to 2018, although IMAX isn’t a big deal to us anymore, the first time of IMAX experience was the most unforgettable experience in my life.

Case study: Cyberbullying Part 2

From the case study part 1, I mentioned about the what cyberbullying is, the reaction of cyberbullying victim and how do mainland Chinese people being bullied.  I realised that the difference between bullying and cyberbullying. For bullying which is bullying in real life and you can see them physically. But for cyberbullying, people use faceless identity and harsh language or information to threat the victim. Since the faceless and nameless identity, it’s hard to chase back for the crime. People keep on satisfy their anger and desire from cyberbullying mainland Chinese people.

However in Hong Kong, is there any regulation to protect internet users or prevent malicious criticism? let's find out.

From the journal “Why Hong Kong Should Legislate on Cyberbullying” Entry No. 13 mentioned there is no specific law to against Cyberbullying but vicim can seek help from Tort Law as Nuisance or Defamation but the law are not made for cyberbullying. Why Hong Kong Should Legislate on Cyberbullying– Entry 13

The Self

How are yourself doing in real life ?

Last week, we had Karen Chan who is a senior account executive at Maxx Marketing as a guest speaker in our lecture class. She had shared her experiences working in different media company. The most interesting part of the talk was about how did she get the job in the company. She revealed that her boss actually hired her because of her instagram posts. She said her boss could tell how a people personality is from what they are posting on social media. It makes me reflected that the social media account that we are running not just simply a picture of ourselves, its also self-branding.

Nowadays, people spend their whole days with social media, it changes the environment of society which is good and bad. For good, interview becomes more various, employer can see different sides of interviewee. But for the con is people don’t post what they like on their social media . They just show what will benefit their “CV”.

"This is not the only dilemma people face when using new social media in a job hunt. As Ken found out, many in the United States are now expected to transform themselves into a brand so as to be (and remain) hirable as flexible agents in pursuit of other jobs."

Also,in a research from “Peer mediation, normativity and the construction of identity online” G. Mascheroni, J.Vincent , E. Jimenez. It mentioned

"As anticipated, the number of likes they receive on their profiles is understood as an indicator of their inclusion in the peer group. As Michele, a 15 year-old Italian boy said: “It is more a girl thing to want many ‘likes,’ and many friends in order to be accepted”"

That’s why social media influencer keep being active on social media to stay fresh their own brand to stay confidence and popular. I think Logan Paul is the typical example. He is well-known for goofy and savage character on Youtube, audiences love watching him being savage and do something they won’t do in real life. Thus , he filmed in the suicide forest in Japan and now he even organising a topical fight with another Youtube KSI in August. It has become his own way to promote himself to the audiences.

However, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I think people nowadays are over focused on “the Self” online and forgetting  about the self in real life and the others. Through bullying and abusing others in front of the audiences in order to show how good and confident they are.

In addition, from a research about “Cyberbullying and self-esteem” found out

"The OLS regression analysis reported in Table 5 reveals a statistically significant relationship between both cyberbullying victimization and offend- ing and self-esteem. More specifically, cyberbullying victims and offenders both have significantly lower self-esteem than those who have not been cyberbul- lying victims or offenders." JUSTIN W. PATCHIN ,SAMEER HINDUJA

Do you think Logan Paul is a successful person? I think it can tell how you see thing from online or real life. I think for himself, he did quite good, he has created so much noises from the audiences, news , social media. But to himself in real life, I think he is lack of content, ideas and most important is losing himself. Thats why he is trying to do more and more silly things to keep the reputation online.

In my opinion, we are all living life in the reality. How many likes or comments online doesn’t matter to ourselves. The main thing matter to me is how I truly feel . I don’t have to be silly or savage to gain confidence, its all about building myself mentally .The “self”. Just like an interview, employer doesn’t want you to act what character of person they are looking for, the truth is they actually want to see how your real person is.

Why does researcher do collaborative media ethnography rather than normal media ethnography ? I can simply say because 2 heads better than one, and let research done easy peasy lemon squeezy. But its just part of the reason. The main reason is to collect the comprehensive and fair ethnographic.

From the Chicago Guide to Collaborative Ethnography by Luke. E. He again and again mentioned about the relationship between power and political. Power and politic issue always become the filter of a research. Researcher may due to the political statement , class bully or even background and affect the media ethnography result. So what is Collaborative media ethnography? Collaborative media ethnography is to keep consulting with the research target. Just like how we did in uni. In order to produce a good quality of assignment, we write down our ideas to the tutor and let him let a look. During writing progress, we ask for tutor consultation for more suggestion and adjustments. And finally submit our assignments. Same thing to the media ethnography, after the research and interview, we keep consult with the research target and keep our both expectation are the same.

I like the example from our lecture note.

‘No we’re never in agreement. Take Friday—he often watches sport late at night, whereas I want to watch a film on the other channel. And sometimes at 10.30 I switch on to the third channel where there’s some talk.Thenhe looks at me and laughs, and we go to bed with each other.

’Early in the evening we watch very little TV. Only when my husband is in a real rage. He comes home, hardly says anything and switches on the TV.’

Bausingerpoints out that in the first case, ‘pressing the button … leads to bed.’ In the second case, ‘pressing the button doesn’t signify “I would like to watch this,” but rather “I would like to hear and see nothing.”’   by HermannBausinger,1984.

That’s really interesting but directly explain what collaborative media ethnography is. Since our background, perspective, politic statement and power are different, it also affects how we produce our product.

I hope in China and Hong Kong , researchers are using collaborative media ethnography , the data of research in Hong Kong always benefit the government perspective and no one knows about the research progress hahaha.
